Covid-19 Testing Scenarios for Education Leaders

An Interactive Dashboard Visualization

As we continue to make progress in the fight against Covid-19, more and more schools are making in-person learning an option for their students.

Mathematica, The Rockefeller Foundation, and the Duke Margolis Health Policy Center partnered to create an interactive online dashboard that allows users to explore the benefits and drawbacks of routine testing in their schools and to guide decisions about which testing strategies to implement. The dashboard takes into account factors such as school type, quarantine policy, and community infection rate.

The dashboard uses agent-based models (ABM), computational models that imitate how interactions of individuals (“agents”) contribute to community-level outcomes, to help education leaders and decision makers implement smart strategies before reopening, in accordance with CDC guidance for testing in K-12 schools.

This dashboard is another important resource to support educators stand up testing in K-12 settings, including the recent allocation of $10 billion for school testing in the American Rescue Plan, as well as implementation support including The Rockefeller Foundation’s K-12 National Testing Action Program (NTAP) and Playbook for Educators and Leaders.
